When a tooth cannot be saved and needs to be extracted, an implant is a great way to help restore function and/or esthetics. Typically, an implant involves three different components. One component is the screw, which is placed into the bone and allowed to heal. The second component is the abutment. The abutment helps to attach the screw to the prosthetic tooth/crown. The last component is the crown itself and is attached to the abutment.

When stabilizing a denture to the implant, there may be several screws placed. The denture is then precisely fitted onto the screw to help anchor it to the tissues.
